Tossa de Mar! How beautiful it is!

March 2nd, 2007

It’s Friday and the end of a looooooong week, which gives way to the possibility of a great weekend! I have already planned it all!
I hope the weather will be friendly!
I want to go to Tossa de Mar, have you been there? Heard about it?
Tossa de Mar lies in the heart of the Costa Brava, (95 kilometres north of Barcelona). It is a really pretty town, with cobbled streets, a magnificent ancient castle and a beautiful mountainous background, with lush green valleys, gorges and natural springs!
There’s a bustling beach life in this attractive resort which appeals to couples and families, rather than all night revellers.
Tossa de Mar was the backdrop of a famous movie called ‘The Flying Dutchman’, starring screen idols like Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra! There is a statue of the actress in the old town, in honour of her stay here!
The coastline is a 14-kilometre stretch of sandy tourist beaches and small sheltered coves. I CAN´T WAIT!

There’s also a full range of watersports and I really want to try some snorkelling! The crystal-clear waters and nearby islands are a magnet for scuba divers, snorkellers (and those who prefer underwater discovery from the safety of a glass bottomed boat!)
The most attractive part of this historic town is the Villa Vella (old quarter) with its ancient defence walls and towers still in tact.
The old town is the only surviving example of a fortified medieval town on the whole of the Catalan coast! It’s a delightful labyrinth of medieval alleys, peppered with shops, restaurants and ancient houses. The walled enclosure, built to guard against pirate raids, has been preserved along with the original defence towers which have become the emblem of Tossa!
Near Tossa there is the Massif of Cadiretes, a natural reserve ,which extends over most of the wider area of Tossa between the plain of La Selva and the coast. This wild, mountainous territory is intersected by river beds, lush valleys and hollows and has a special ecosystem born out of the Mediterranean climate, combined with the high levels of humidity and rain here.
Take a weekend free from busy Barcelona and go to visit this special place to find out for yourselves!
