The University of Barcelona, a very unusual tourist attraction!!
March 29th, 2007
Even if like me, you are one of the many people who have deeply fallen in love with the city of Barcelona, and who have been lucky enough to appreciate all that the city has to offer, you may never of thought of visiting the University. Why bother if you’re not studying there?? Actually Barcelona University is not just a house of learning, but a fascinating place in a beautiful package…
For the ones who don’t know, one of the biggest universities in Catalunya, the University of Barcelona is situated right in the centre of the city, and I can assure you that it is definitively worth a visit, regardless of if you are interested in studying or not!
Actually, it feels more like entering a castle than a university, contemplating all the stone figures of ancient famous people by the entrance, and the enormous classical oil paintings on the walls - it was built in 1863.
Once I passed by one of the halls where students were practicing for a choir concert, so I peeked in to get a feeling of the classrooms. Wow. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that it was like entering one of these fancy churches with a lot of flamboyent wooden carvings all over the place, and stain-glass windows giving off a special light everywhere. And of course, the beautiful choir song might have had something to do with the feeling… The best part of this university is that they have a huge garden in the backyard where students (or non studying people like myself!!) can hang out and - or eat their lunch there as I sometimes do.
Or, you can make the most of the gardens, especially on a sunny day, by going for a stroll, and if you’re lucky you might be joined by some of the very adorable felines who fill the gardens. Really cuuuute!
It’s just one of those stunning places that no-one really knows about (apart from the students), and I think it should be on everyone’s list of things to see in Barcelona.
So if you are around, take the chance and have a look! Maybe you will even fancy studying again….
