The Catalan Pyrenees, an unforgetable weekend

March 5th, 2007

I was looking at the pictures of the past weekend…and I was realizing again how gorgeous it was!!
We were nine people, divided into two cars, with just a small bag each, and plenty of food and drinks.

You can’t plan a trip and then expect that everything will go exactly according to schedule!!! We decided to leave Barcelona early, 8.00 o’clock on Saturday morning…(trust me…it’s a big effort for me!!) …at nine the two cars, one smelling of leeks and the other one of onions, finally left the city , in an attempt to get to the Pyrenees!! “An attempt”, because the only one of us who knew the way is not normally trusted when he says “I know where it is”! Last time we went right around the block twice and he was still saying “I know where it is!”…but he’s our friend and we love him in any case! … And he happens to have a house in the mountains ;)

When we reached the house in Port del Compte you can’t imagine the surprise! A wonderful wood chalet, with a big garden behind with a wonderful and private look-out with views of the mountains! You couldn’t hear one sound, the silence of the mountains was incredible, it wrapped up your soul, leaving an impression of calm and tranquillity in your body…that was the energy that I really needed to feel refreshed and invigorated!

The house was situated in a wonderful residential area, where all the houses were nestled in the mountains, and all built in the same style…one word: magnificent!

During the afternoon we went for a walk in the mountains (we were helped with the use of a car but one of my friends got to the top running!! We were all shocked!). We managed to reach a very high place with a spectacular panoramic view…(look at the picture on the right!).

I told you before; we travelled in two different cars and we brought lots of food!  In the garden of our friend’s house there was a barbecue, we cooked meet, chicken, calcots, breads and vegetables! I couldn’t move afterwards, I was so full that it was easier to roll than walks! We came in to the house after 3 or 4 hours and everybody was thinking about a “Siesta” ! Later on, those who went running up the mountains took a rest - I’m not suprised!! Meanwhile, our attention was caught by others things: killing the “arrugas” (a kind of worm that can kill the tree that it inhabits by sucking all of the sap), sitting under the sun, playing games, the total moon eclipse (that was amazing, the moon was covered by the earth’s shadow and some reflection from somewhere gave it a red colour!). It was an appropriate end to a fabulous day.

The day after went very fast and we all felt very sad, we had to leave our oasis of peace and of course clean the house!.

I really advise anyone who is planning a trip from Barcelona, to go to the Pyrenees, and if it is Port del Compte, even better! It´s just two hours away from Barcelona so you can rent a car and just go for a day if you don’t have much time. Now is not the best time to ski (there was just some small tracks of snow), but you can enjoy the views, the weather and walking around. It’s a magical place!
