The Camp Nou

December 13th, 2006

I have been living and working in Barcelona for roughly a month now. As I am a huge football fan, Barcelona is of course a perfect city to stay in. I thought that the people in the Netherlands were very football minded but here in Barcelona the whole society is just mad of football; there are lots of football- channels, bars, shops, clubs, and it is amazing to see that the whole city supports the team. I heard that when Barcelona became the champion of the Primera Division last year and the year before that everyone supporting the team came to the city centre to celebrate the championship. The city centre and surrounding areas were totally packed with cheering, screaming and singing people, and when they won the Champions League last year it was even more spectacular. It must have been an amazing experience being there, if they achieve it this year I am certainly going check it out.

Hearing all this from several people I have met in Barcelona I was really looking forward to seeing a match at the Barcelona stadium Camp Nou. I managed to get some reasonably cheap tickets for really good seats for the match Barcelona against Real Sociedad. The match itself wasn’t one of the most exciting matches I have ever seen, probably because they played against the lowest team in the rankings. Still I really enjoyed being there, just because the whole atmosphere in the stadium is fantastic and there were some moments when Ronaldinho and Deco were giving away a little show at the pitch. Besides that, the stadium is amazing, it is just huge and even when they play against a low ranking team like Real Sociedad, it is totally packed there were almost no empty seats.

If the atmosphere is already this great in an on first sight not to interesting match, I am wondering how it is when they play against Real Madrid, or a match against a good opponent in the next round of the Champions League. I can’t wait to find out, because after this experience I am shore that I will be seeing a few of the bigger matches in the near future.
