Sailing off the coast of Barcelona!

March 1st, 2007

Living in Barcelona has many advantages, one of them being the proximity to the gorgeous Mediterranean sea! And in my opinion one of the best ways to enjoy Barcelona and to really ‘see’ the city, is from the sea!

We are lucky enough to have beautiful blue skies most of the time, so it doesn’t really matter whether it’s spring, summer, or autumn, when it comes to taking advantage of the many boat trips along the Barcelona coastline.

The choice is endless, from top-of-the-range yachts, to catamarans, to small boats called ‘Gambas’ – or prawns (I think I’ll give that a miss!!). And you can be as active or lazy as you like and either learn the art of sailing, or just sit back and let the professionals get on with it! If you’re not from a sailing background ‘Bautizo del Mar’ is a boat trip to teach beginners the basics of sailing, lasting up to 2 hours.

I’m not the most energetic of people, so for me the prefect way to take to the water is on one of Barcelona’s ‘Jazz cruises’. Absolute heaven!

These cruises normally take place in the evenings, so you are out on the water when the sun sets, which is a stunning site, as you look back towards the Montjuic mountain and Sagrada Familia. There are lots of photograph opportunities, if you’re a bit snap-happy like me! The trip takes around 2 hours and, basically, you just relax and sip wine, whilst a jazz musician plays some chilled-out tunes. It’s a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while! Then you can come back in and enjoy the nightlife.

    Hello!
I’ve never heard of boats called ‘gambas’ but ‘golondrinas’. Maybe the gambas ones are more modern :D
‘Las golondrinas’ is one of the few things that still there after all these years, as a ‘remain from the past’. I think I haven’t been on one since I was a child, I think it’s time to experience this again!

Hi Pepe, Yes I was a bit suprised by the ‘gambas’ boats, but they do exist, normally holding around 5 to 6 people. It might just be a name that some companies use. I’m not sure! I really recommend the Jazz cruise though, it’s such a nice relaxing way to see the city :)
