Rolling around Barcelona – The new skating craze!
January 26th, 2007Would you like to feel the warm breeze on your cheeks while enjoying a great sunny view of the Mediterranean Sea shore? If so, I actually have a great suggestion for you! At least if you are willing to kill two birds with one stone and do some exercise at the same time!
The only thing you need is a pair of rollerblades (and maybe some protection if you feel like Bambi on ice)! The kilometre long coast line of Barcelona is perfect to go skating along - I often spend my Sunday afternoons rollerblading and it is a really good way to unwind after a busy week, and when you are tired you can always make a stop and throw yourself on the sandy beach for a while! During the weekends you can find a lot of people who have the same idea!
Actually, the interest for this kind of sport here in Barcelona seems to be quite high. I’m always amazed by the young skaters who gather in the afternoons at the square ‘Plaza Universitat’, showing off with their incredible skills. I think some of them were actually born with rollerblades on, considering the way they can jump in the air and slide on the benches without killing themselves trying!
For ordinary people like me who cannot fly like a bird, there are other options. Some passionate people have come up with the splendid idea to create “skate groups” where anyone who fancies joining, is welcome. They gather in the evenings in certain parts of the city centre and then go blading around the city for a couple of hours. You can even choose the difficulty level with different routes and groups, so that complete beginners won’t be frightened, and the more advanced skaters won’t be bored.
If you really want to get into it, you can join a skate association where they offer free classes for those who have not had wheels underneath their feet before. They also have a lot of social activities like dinners and so on.
So there is no excuse to not put on your rollerblades next time you’re going to the beach!

It’s been a while since I’ve been rollerskating (memories of 4 wheel metal frames strapped to my trainers - not to mention the grazed knees) but I’ve quite fancied a set of rollerblades. What a perfect way to work on that New Year’s Resolution to lose a bit of weight and have enormous fun at the same time!?

You are right, it is a great sport - and it does not take too long until you have grasped the idea how to skate!
If you have ever done ice-skating you will find it much easier learning rollerblading!
