Park Guell, between Wonderland and Lord of Rings!
February 20th, 2007When you feel strange, mystical or just need a change of scenery to watch the world from another viewpoint, well in that situation I go straight to Park Guell! Let me speak about one of the most fabulous places in Barcelona , which I always think is a cross-between Alice in Wonderland and Lord of Rings.
The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi de Güell, whom the park was named after. The buildings are very original and remarkable with fantastically shaped roofs with unusual pinnacles.
The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent.
The Park’s high-point offers the most complete view of Barcelona and the bay, it’s possible to view the main city in panaroma, with the Sagrada Família and the Montjuïc area visible at a distance.
You can reach the park by metro, the nearest stop is “Vallcarca” (although the stations are at a distance from the Park) or by city buses.
While entrance to the Park is free, Gaudí’s house, “la Torre Rosa,” — containing furniture that he designed — can only bevisited for an entrance fee, but it isn’t very expensive.
Plan on taking at least half a day to visit this Barcelona attraction, and remember if you take the metro to Park Guell, be ready for the 20-minute hill climb to the entrance!
