Go for tapas! A very Spanish and tasty treat!
March 21st, 2007
I really love the Spanish life style! I think they know how to throw a good party, they usually eat very tasty food and they have big get-togethers with lots of people!
A normal Tuesday afternoon after work can start with: “Vamos a tomar algo?” (Do you want to go for a drink?) and then before you know it the night’s almost over and you’re coming home late again - maybe even too late to sit and spent a few minutes in front of the television!
Just yesterday after work we went to a bar; we started talking and drinking and then someone said “let’s go to get something to eat, I know a place just around the corner that makes wonderful empanadas!”. It was true except for the location, we had to travel from Sants district to Gracia, but it was for a good reason!
I had never heard before about ‘empanadas’, it is a kind of pastry rolled out thinly and used as a “box”, you can have a meet empanada, fish, vegetables and more.. or just everything mixed together…trust me every one is delicious!
And besides the taste, I think the history of the ‘Empanada’ is quite curious!!!
The idea of an empanada may originate from the Moors, who occupied Spain for 800 years. Middle Eastern cuisine to this day has similar foods, like simbusak (a fried, chickpea filled “empanada”) from Iraq. The original emapnada is from Galicia, they used to prepare it like a pie and cut it into different pieces.
I love Spanish food, we spent all night moving from a bar to another bar and asking for different kinds of tapas - small apetisers which could be cold or warm such as olives and cheese. They are often very strongly flavored with garlic, chilies or paprika, often one or more of the choices is seafood (mariscos), and in Barcelona they are usually served with “pan amb tomaquet”, (bread with tomate and a bit of garlic). “Ir a tapear” is one of the cheapest and funniest ways to have a real spanish dinner! You can spend all evening (soon becoming night!) changing bar, eating, drinking and chatting with your friends, and making new friends…why not!
