Barcelona Grand prix!
December 29th, 2006
If you are a racing enthusiast or even if you’re not, and have a bit of spare cash lying around, I would really recommend a trip to the Barcelona Grand Prix in Montmeló.
I’ve been two years in a row now and it really is a fantastic day (or weekend) out!
The race takes place each year in May, normally the first or second weekend, and the track is located about 20 minutes by train from Barcelona centre.
O.k. so the tickets are quite expensive and a bit of forward planning is involved, but it really is worth it. You can by tickets for the race day only, or 2 and 3 day tickets for the practise days. You can also see races for formula 2 cars and Maseratis.
You are pretty much guaranteed good weather, with blue skies and sunshine, and even if you don’t have a clue who Michael Schumacher is or what a yellow flag means, you can just catch a tan and soak up the atmosphere!!
Somehow last year I managed to get some passes for the pits, and spent some of the afternoon rubbing shoulders with celebrities (well formula 2 drivers anyway!)
The city puts on lots of extra transport to cope with the thousands of people that flock to Barcelona during this weekend, so it’s fairly easy to get to and from the races each day, but if you prefer staying close by, there are a number of hotels in Montmeló itself, you just have to book well in advance.
If you do want to stay in the city centre, then it doesn’t create any problems, and of course it gives you the opportunity to see some of Barcelona’s legendary nightlife, just make sure that you don’t over do it, so that you can get to the track early to save the best seats!

I’m a huge Formula 1 fan! I can’t wait to see how Fernando Alonso is going to do in the McLaren, particularly as Kimi Raikkonen had such a rough time of it last year and did not seem to do much (if any) development work during the season. Does anyone else think that Alonso is going to take a third championship this year? On a more ‘Barcelona related’ theme, did you know that Barcelona used to have a Grand Prix in the city centre? (similar to Monaco). The Montjuic Grand Prix was first held in 1969 (I think!) and also was the venue for a 24 hour (Le Mans style) motorcycle endurance race. In 2004, the city council of Barcelona decided to mark out the layout of the old track. Next time you go out for a jog in the city, why not do a few laps!?

Yeah, i’m looking forward to seeing how weel Alonso is going to do. I have a fantasy formula one team, which came 6th out of 2000 last year!! But i can honestly say i really don’t know how things will shape up in the first few races, i guess we’ll just have to wait and see?? What you say about the ‘Le mans’ style racing in Barcelona is really hard to imagine. It probably meant that a lot of the now pedestrianised areas weren’t that way before. I really like the location now, it’s perfect for this kind of event, nestled in the catalunya hills.
