“L’EIXAMPLE” BARCELONA… A MUSEUM ON YOUR DOORSTEP

January 29th, 2007

Without any doubt, L’Eixample is one of the most beautiful quarters in Barcelona! Actually, if you have the chance of going for a walk down any of the many amazing avenues and streets, you will see the area looks like a museum…an outdoor museum!

I live in L’Eixample and I really think it is one of the best areas in Barcelona in which to live. The streets and buildings are often breathtakingly beautiful and extravagant and there are lots of things to see and amazing places to visit. Bordered by the ‘Gran Via’ in the south and ‘Diagonal’ in the north, this large quarter is considered to be the birthplace of Modernism. Apart from the impressive buildings, the layout of the streets could be considered a work of art in itself. Like ‘The Big Apple’ – New York city, the streets have a block layout, so it’s both practical and very difficult to get lost (well for most people!).

In this area you will find some of the most beautiful attractions of Barcelona, such as Gaudi’s world famous “Sagrada Família” cathedral and the monuments of “La Casa Batlló” and “La Pedrera” or the incredible street of “Passeig de Gràcia” which is by far Barcelona’s chicest avenue, with Chanel, Gucci and Burberry standing side by side. These are only examples, because everything that you see in this district is awesome, above all the many modernist buildings!

And this is not all; L’Eixample is very well located, in the city centre. So, if you are enjoying a walk in this area, you are probably not very far from “Las Ramblas” or “Plaza Catalunya”, which are certainly considered symbols of Barcelona. The trendy ‘Born’ district and historic Gothic quarter are also close by.

Its’ location is for sure one of the best aspects of L’Eixample, moreover, it’s a key area for those who want to enjoy Barcelona’s nightlife! Last weekend, I went out with some friends around L’Eixample and we had an incredible evening!! There are a lot of bars and discos where you can spend happy evenings, without the need to take a taxi or car. If you’re staying anywhere in the city centre, then you can go out in the Eixample and walk home! As well as the nightlife, architecture and tourist attractions, the Eixample is filled with 1st class restaurants and many, many shops. Basically, what ever you’re looking for, you’ll find it here!

In conclusion, if you are coming to visit Barcelona, I absolutely recommend that you spend a couple of days wandering around this beautiful part of the city! Keep your chin facing the sky to see the beautiful architecture above your head, but try to watch where you are going at the same time!

I totally agree with everything you say! My father is an architect and he’s always tried to help me appreciate great buildings (of which Barcelona has many!). I found this other Blog on the web: The Blabbings of a Pizza Cheese which you might like to visit to find out more about Gaudi. It’s got some great photos. These buildings have almost no angles - just smooth curves. It must have taken an age to build these things!

    Hey Scott!!

Thanks a lot for this link! Actually, I never get bored to read and see more things about Gaudi.
